Nursing in schools

I’ve been a pediatric nurse for almost 19 years. I’ve worked on a medical floor, in a gastroenterology clinic, and I’m now nursing in a school.
School nursing is a 180 degree turn from nursing in a hospital or clinic. I changed to schools because I wanted to be on the same schedule as my kids. I felt like time was flying by way too quickly, and I was missing a lot of it.
It was one of the best decisions of my life. Also one of the craziest. I am in a middle school. A middle school, you guys. These kids are a hot mess. Thankfully, so am I. Turns out, I fit right in. I love them. They’re crazy. I get eye rolls at home all the time. Now, I have the chance to experience those eye rolls every day of my life. How lucky am I???
This is my third year in the schools, and I love it. It has been a struggle. I mistakenly thought school nursing would be easier than the clinic/hospital setting.
I was wrong.
It’s harder.
I am constantly looking around for a nursier nurse. Not sure where they went.
I used to be surrounded by nurses and doctors. If I didn’t know something, I had other people at my fingertips. Now, I’m it. People think I know everything about everything.
Having said that, it’s ok to say “I don’t know, but I will figure it out and get back to you.” That is 100% ok to say. However, you need to be prepared for every emergency, at any moment, and you’re it. You’re supposed to be the adult person that directs other adult persons, keeps calm, keeps students calm, and totally know what you’re doing. You know go with your nurse gut.
With that said, I have found the perfect gift that will be loved by school nurses, teachers, admin, counselors, and custodians (especially the custodians). Just imagine the whirlwind mess your kids make at home and multiply that by 1,000. These custodians deserve all the raises…
It’s fine. I’m fine. We’re all fine.
😳😂
